Come and celebrate the fruits of the last remaining Parisian vineyard. The traditional Montmartre Harvest Festival will be held from October 8th to 12th. This event, rich in heritage, offering the finest produce, bursting with entertainment and full of fun, offers the perfect excuse for an autumn getaway to Paris. This year’s theme will be one close to the heart of Les Plumes Hotel; poets and poetry.
Welcome to the joys of the Vendanges de Montmartre
There was a time when Paris produced wine in great quantities. A time when clusters of vineyards clung to the slopes of the butte of Montmartre, drowsing in the summer sun. Today, in the place where the Romans once raised a shrine to Bacchus, the god of wine, there is only one vineyard remaining, but the Clos de Montmartre is loved by all.
Although the last historic Parisian vineyard fell victim to the urban expansion of Paris in the 19th century, the tradition was revived by a group of artists and romantic traditionalists who petitioned the authorities and received a grant of a plot of land not far from the Sacre Coeur Basilica. Here they established a vineyard in 1934 that has flourished ever since.
Each year the grape harvest of the Clos Montmartre is celebrated in fine style with a five day event that includes a big parade with dancers, musicians and traditional costumes. There’s also a fireworks display with music, presented close to the basilica, along with concerts and games. Stalls are set up offering arts and crafts and fine local produce for you to sample. It’s a celebration the whole family can enjoy.
